Originally established in 2005 as an addition to the GT1 and GT2 categories, GT3 has become the focus category for many national and international grand touring events, such as the British GT Championship and the Nurburgring 24 Hours. All cars, regardless of model, have a similar power to weight ratio either through high power and high weight, or conversely low power and low weight. GT3 regulations allow for a wide variety of vehicles, which must be based on production road car models, to be homologated – by adjusting limits on weight, the engine and aerodynamics, all cars compete on a level playing field and no single manufacturer can become dominant in the class.
