With its Imperial Castle, Albrecht Dürer and the Christkindlesmarkt Christmas Market plus airport, exhibition centre and business tower, Nuremberg is more than just a city with a rich history and timber-framed architecture. Thick city walls with altogether 80 towers surround the historic old town centre of the Franconian metropolis, which was first mentioned in records as long ago as 1050. History can be experienced live in the Imperial Castle, the city’s landmark, or during a guided tour of Albrecht Dürer’s house with Agnes Dürer, who recounts her life with her husband and painting genius. Childhood dreams are awakened by the nostalgic exhibits in the Toy Museum, the world-renowned Germanisches Nationalmuseum is the place for those particularly interested in art and cultural history, and admirers of contemporary art will not regret their visit to the New Museum – State Museum of Art and Design.
A visit to the old town churches with works of art by the famous Nuremberg sculptors Veit Stoß and Adam Kraft is a rewarding experience, likewise a trip to Nuremberg zoo, one of Europe’s loveliest landscaped zoos with the only dolphinarium in South Germany. The permanent exhibition on “Fascination and Terror” in the Documentation Centre of the Nazi Party rally grounds sheds light on the history of National Socialism and certainly not only shows the way ahead for Nuremberg, the city of peace and human rights. The “Memorium Nuremberg Trials” in room 600 – the showplace of the Nuremberg Trials from 1945 to 1949 – provides access to a place of information and documentation in a historic location and examines the background, course and effects of the Nuremberg Trials.
