Nissan R89C #23 Le Mans 1989 CA28a.

For the 1989 season, rather than relying again on chassis built by March, Nissan had developed the R89C model in conjunction with Lola. The car featured a kevlar and carbon-fibre based monocoque chassis fitted with Nissan's new twin-turbo VRH35 3.5L V8 DOHC engine which was mounted in a stressed installation for better chassis rigidity, delivering up to 950bhp.

Despite Nissan's efforts, the 1989 World Sportscar Championship season was rather unsuccessful for Nissan, as their cars lacked reliability and speed. The beautiful R89C was only able to score points in three races and finished the season in fifth place in the championship for teams.

At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, three R89C

s were entered into the race, none of which reached the finish line. Car number 23 was driven bye M. Hasemi, K. Hoshino, T. Suzuki. Once again, Nissan had chosen '23' for one of its official cars. The reason is that number 23 can be read as "ni san" in Japanese, and this is why Nissan frequently enters a car numbered '23' into motorsport events.

La Nissan R89C è una vettura Sport Prototipo da competizione, realizzata secondo il regolamento tecnico FIA categoria Gruppo C per essere schierata dalla casa giapponese Nissan Motor Co. nel Campionato Mondiale Sport Prototipi 1989. Sviluppata in collaborazione con Lola, la R89C era dotata di una monoscocca in fibra di carbonio e kevlar ed era spinta da un nuovo propulsore Nissan twin-turbo VRH35 3.5L V8 DOHC che, accoppiato al rigido telaio, era in grado di erogare 950bhp.

Nel Campionato Mondiale Sport Prototipi 1989, Nissan faticò molto a trovare l'affidabilità per il nuovo abbinamento telaio-motore riuscendo a conquistare punti in sole tre gare del campionato, raggiungendo il 5° posto finale nella classifica costruttori.

Alla 24 Ore di Le Mans del 1989, la casa nipponica decise di schierare tre R89Cs ufficiali, nessuna delle quali, tuttavia, portò a termine la gara a causa di problemi meccanici. Nissan scelse ancora una volta il numero 23 per una delle sue vetture ufficiali. La ragione risiede nel fatto che in giapponese '23' si pronuncia 'ni san', onomatopeico di Nissan.
